The Role

Position: NHL German-language Social Media Manager

Reports to: Seven League Social Planner

Location: Remote (ideally located in Germany)

Contract Length: 1 September 2021 to 30th June 2022

Days Per Week: Approximately 2.25 days (18 hours split across 7 days)

Seven League is one of Europe’s leading digital sports consultancies, working with some of the biggest names in sport including FIFA, FC Barcelona, NBA and the NHL.

Seven League is looking for a German Social Media Manager to work on the prestigious NHL. This is a part-time position with a one-month probation period. Seven League has a diverse workforce and is an equal opportunities employer.

This role solely focuses on running the NHL’s social media channels in German language territories (Austria, Switzerland and Germany). The NHL is one of the world’s leading sporting leagues and a global brand. The ambition is to grow the sport of hockey across the globe through locally relevant, engaging and exciting social media.

Day-to-day community management of NHL Facebook and Twitter accounts in German. The aim will be to drive growth German by driving engagement and exciting our new, casual and hardcore fans.

There will be a focused effort on maximising awareness, interest and excitement around local players, as well as driving awareness around tune in for the NHL’s weekend games – these are games that take place on Saturday and Sunday every week commencing at a European audience friendly time.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

• Tweeting on the @NHLDE Twitter account and posting to German speakers via the main NHL Facebook page, alongside contributions to a forthcoming Instagram account

• You’ll be part of the Seven League NHL social team (five other markets) and work with the NHL Social Media Team to ensure all social platforms are entertaining and engaging every day of the year

• The social channels you run will also promote key NHL initiatives and events with high quality content

• Be prepared to report on the previous night’s games first thing in the morning (7-9am European time) so the fans get the latest news, highlights, and more, when they wake up (and to cover some key late-night US time zone games, for example, NHL All-Star Weekend, and the Stanley Cup Final)

• Be available to cover selected European primetime games (estimated 10 games per season) live over social media (likely 8pm-1am CET during the weekend)

• Create and/or publish engaging and shareable made-for-social content, whether planned and structured or quick and reactive

• Creating an engaged community, talking to fans every day, and being the main point of contact for all localised queries that come in via social media – referring up where necessary

• Develop a strong network of local influencers who can be relied upon to reach new hockey fans in Germany, Austria & Switzerland, and can be considered as part of the NHL’s wider marketing strategy

• Execute weekly social media content calendar provided by Seven League

• Contribute new ideas in weekly content calls with internal NHL Seven League team

• Assist with production and localisation of editorial content on social media channels e.g., using Photoshop to update score graphics in German

• Closely monitor all social media activity relating to the league, its adjacent leagues, the sport, its teams, its players and staff

• Help promote the league’s activities, content and commercial messaging

• Be prepared to work flexible hours to ensure suitable coverage of the NHL’s regular season and post-season


Key Relationships

Internal – Seven League NHL Social Team (Lead, Social Planner and Producer), NHL International Social Media Lead and the other local market Social Managers (Finland, Czech Republic, Russia, Sweden, Instagram)

External – Local country fans, regional hockey fan clubs, and local influencers

Essential Skills

• A minimum of two years’ experience managing sizeable social media channels and audiences

• A good understanding the German sports market, specifically NHL players, fans, associations and culture

• Strong coordination skills, able to demonstrate experience managing and handling large scale content plans and schedules

• Considerable knowledge of NHL and hockey

• Fluent in German (spoken and written), with perfect spelling, grammar and syntax

• High level English literacy (spoken and written)

• Experienced admin user of all major social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and key understanding of what content works for each platform

• Comfortable adopting and a brand's tone of voice across social media platforms

• Flexible, reactive and sound editorial judgement

• Social/digital first brain rather than journalistic point of view

• Good understanding of analytics tools and data – what the data means, how to react to it, and how to reach key KPIs

• A finger on the pulse in terms of social media trends, market understanding and the potential application of this information for the NHL

• Ability to locate, engage with, and manage key online influencers in Germany

• A passion for hockey and the NHL

Preferable Skills

• Understanding and experience of photo manipulation software – e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator

• Understanding and experience of video editing software desirable – e.g. Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Final Cut, Avid

• Knowledge of social media management, project management and collaboration tools – e.g. Box, Slack, Buffer, Giphy

• Experience of live sporting event coverage – inc. video tools such Grabyo, SnappyTV

• Delivery of social media output which enhances the league’s position of being market-leading in terms of a digital sports experience

• New fan growth, engagements and video views for NHL German-language Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

• Build a reputation for NHL in Germany/Austria/Switzerland as a league who embraces this community, through active listening and engagement with their fans

• A network of engaged influencers (big and small) who actively promote the NHL in a positive light on a regular basis

• Professional, accurate and entertaining NHL social media channels

Part I: Further Information

· We estimate the role would be 1-2 hours every morning to engage fans as they go to work/school, 1-2 hours in the evenings and community engagement with our fans each day

· Plus, live social media coverage of key games, e.g., 10 weekend primetime games per season, All-Star weekend, Global Series games and selective Playoffs and Finals games live

· Interviews to take place via Zoom

· Invoices paid on a monthly basis for set amount

· It’s likely the successful candidate will have to travel to London or one of the Global Series games in Europe one or two times a year for meetings, training and getting to know the other NHL social media managers – COVID restrictions pending

· Successful candidate would be expected to use their own computer, but Seven League would provide professional level subscriptions to tools like Box, Sprinklr, and Slack
