FC Barcelona English WeChat Account Signals Tencent’s Global Ambitions

FC Barcelona announced a few days ago that the club has decided to launch on the wildly popular Chinese messaging app, WeChat. Though not the first football team on WeChat, Barcelona is unique in launching not just a Chinese account, but an English one as well, signifying that they are catering to more than a Chinese audience.

The combination of China’s growing sports market and homegrown companies looking to expand internationally seems like the beginning of a beautiful relationship between sports brands and national companies- there are already several lucrative sponsorship deals inked, including electrical goods company, Suning and Barcelona .

Smart move to WeChat- it’ll be interesting to see how both accounts are received in China and abroad.
