After one week at the World Cup, we took a look at the starting XI of players at the World Cup with accounts on both Tencent and Sina Weibo. Sina’s starting XI has a total of over 7.5 million followers, with 2 players each from the England, Italy, Germany, Brazilian and Argentinian squads, as well as Wesley Sneijder from Holland. The Tencent XI has over 44 million followers and despite Spain crashing out of the World Cup after just two games, the starting XI has 5 players from this nation.

Insights:

– Tencent was the first to attract the most popular football stars, with Messi and Ronaldo joining in December 2010 and September 2011 respectively.

– The core of the Tencent followers comes from Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi with over 30 million followers between them, highlighting the online influence of the world’s best players.

– Despite Tencent’s starting XI having a larger number of followers, more players are now joining Sina with many seeing a faster level of growth on this platform.
