55 National Associations participate in UEFA’s leagues and competitions. UEFA and Seven League identified the need to improve the digital platforms, capabilities and content output for these associations.

While some associations have significant resource and digital teams, others are small and have only just started their digital journey. A customised support programme was required to accelerate digital performance no matter what level of resource and ability.

Seven League was engaged by UEFA to devise and execute a digital acceleration plan that could be implemented with any association, whatever their digital maturity. We’ve been supporting this programme since 2014.

UEFA Digital Strategy & Fan Engagement

UEFA is a governing body presiding over the world's most popular and iconic club football tournament in the Champions League. While a hugely successful B2B operation, UEFA's capacity to engage fans directly was under-developed and needed clear definition and agreement across the business.

UEFA approached Seven League to do a root-and-branch audit of its digital operations and define its digital strategy for the next five years.

Tottenham Hotspur Commercial Transformation

Commercial Growth

Seven League spent two and a half years leading the digital transformation of Tottenham Hotspur, through a unique period in its history.

This leadership ranged from the macro (digital strategy, org changes, commercial transformation) to the micro (day-to-day embed of Seven League Senior Consultant to fulfil the role of Head of Content).

As part of the transformation, the club saw (i) the addition of numerous new partners (including Nike), (ii) renewals of existing partners (including AIA), and (iii) significant change to its digital inventory.

Seven League was tasked with supporting and guiding the commercial partnerships team through a critical time in its financial development. We gave clarity and leadership to make sense of the thousands of pieces of inventory and their relative value, educating both the THFC team and their partners.

The FA Matchday App Marketing

Campaign Management

The FA wanted to increase the number of people playing football at a grassroots level. To do this, they created the Matchday app which aims to reduce the amount of admin (chasing players, collecting subs, submitting match reports) involved in running a grassroots football team. The app had four very different target audiences different needs (players, managers, parents and league/clubs admins) and so The FA needed specialist support in developing a campaign that targeted each of these groups.

Seven League was asked to develop a marketing campaign to raise awareness of the Matchday app and encourage downloads.

Lionesses Social Media Training

Training & Mentorship

Ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019, The FA recognised that the event would bring a different level of exposure to England’s Lionesses on social media.

The FA wanted to ensure their senior squad was ready to capitalise on this interest and that meant optimising their personal social media channels.

The players needed to be brought up to speed on social media and how to use it; from the basics (being findable and followable) through to best practices and how social media can contribute to growing their profile and giving them a voice.

Seven League was engaged to train the players in how to leverage these new audiences and capitalise on the opportunities social media provides, while also protecting them from harmful exposure.

Ryder Cup Sponsor Activation

The Ryder Cup is one of the world’s most iconic sporting events, combining passion, suspense and rivalry to entertain fans globally. However, live sports events are about much more than that now – attending fans want immersive experiences that deliver a complete entertainment package.

Aberdeen Standard Investments (ASI) have been a principle partner of the Ryder Cup since 2013 for the 2014 event at Gleneagles. For the 2018 event at Le Golf National in Paris, ASI were looking at new ways to engage fans and bring their sponsorship of the tournament to life.

Seven League was asked by the Ryder Cup & European Tour to develop an innovative campaign activation for ASI that combined digital and physical worlds to excite fans (both at the event and at home).

Premier League Localisation Strategy

The Premier League is the most watched league in the world. It is broadcast in over 200 territories, reaching in excess of 700 million homes and with an estimated audience of over 4.7 billion people.

At the time of this project PremierLeague.com was translated into 6 languages, but with no truly localised content. The Premier League had identified key strategic markets for investment through digital channels.

Seven League was engaged to advise on strategy and approach to these markets through a dedicated and detailed localisation study.

NBA Digital Product Localisation

Platform Strategy

The NBA have a range of well-produced digital products, from websites to native mobile apps and their OTT service League Pass. The NBA knew that different markets have different needs and that components like language, tone-of-voice and service would need to be optimised at a country to country level.

These variations can come from cultural, socio-economic or simply web infrastructure differences between markets; particularly relevant when the main content format being consumed is video.

Seven League were engaged to develop different digital product features in 5 key markets (Spain, India, Japan, Brazil and Mexico) and test these using research groups with sports fans in each market.

NBA Social Media Management

Content Services

The NBA is a premium global sport, shown in >200 countries in over 40 languages. The NBA EMEA team are tasked with driving growth of the sport outside of the US and developing long term fan engagement strategies.

Our brief was to see how social media could grow fan engagement and promote consumption of the sport, originally in five key markets: France, UK, Spain, Turkey and Italy.

Seven League was initially challenged to audit the NBA’s social media accounts in Europe. Our report outlined some recommendations that would take the NBA European accounts from good to great. The NBA took the recommendations on board and asked Seven League to implement them at the start of 2017 and beyond.

2016 will be remembered by most LCFC fans as the year they won their first Premier League title, however it also saw the beginning of a long-term digital transformation project; The digital strategy we set with the club began with fixing the foundations: outdated and buggy web platforms. This presented an opportunity to achieve the Club’s wider strategic vision for a truly unified digital fan experience; It led to a decision to renew their underlying ticketing, e-commerce, CRM and business intelligence technology platforms at the same time in order to drive ROI; As the club’s primary digital partner, Seven League was tasked with delivering this strategic vision

FIFA Best Awards Fan Engagement Competition

Fan Engagement

Promoting football and building relationships with fans by taking them closer to the game are key elements of FIFA’s 2.0 vision. The Best FIFA Football Awards are the ultimate stage in football - one night when outstanding performers and their achievements are celebrated and recognised.

Introduced in 2017, FIFA was looking to establish the event as a key date in the football calendar and so growing the level of awareness amongst fans was critical for FIFA.

FIFA wanted to introduce an element of fan engagement to the Awards ceremony, allowing fans to vote but also giving some fans the chance to attend the exclusive event

Seven League's relationship with the club started in 2014 with an audit of their digital operations. Since then the club has continued to prosper and we have been proud to support the club in many areas, helping build them into the brand they are today.

As ever, the challenge is to keep up with the pace at which our industry changes; from tech advances and consumer behaviours, to player accessibility and deep data, Juventus are focused on ensuring their on-field performance is matched by their digital operations.

Juventus Content Mix Analysis

Content Strategy

Very few clubs have a thorough understanding of their digital content output, its impact or the ROI it delivers. Publishing in three languages (English, Spanish and Italian), Juventus FC wanted more visibility of what their content mix and composition was across Facebook & Juventus.com.

That meant understanding which content types are worth commissioning, which hold the most value and which are most closely aligned with the organisation’s business and audience needs.

Seven League was engaged to deliver a comprehensive and forensic analysis of content across three languages and two platforms, totalling over 1,500 pieces of content – what we call ‘Content Mix’.

FIFA Women’s World Cup #LegendsAssemble

Campaign Management

For the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the largest to date, FIFA launched a team of Legends (male and female) to promote the event.

Seven League was challenged to build a campaign around the extraordinary lives of these ambassadors, 23 former footballers, the Legends Squad. The objective was to drive FWWC match attendance and increase fan engagement online through delivery of inspiring content that educated football fans, while also changing perceptions of women’s international football

Racecourse Growth Project

Digital Strategy

Great British Racing (GBR) is the official marketing and promotional body for British Horseracing whose aim is to grow interest and participation in the sport.

GBR came to Seven League to initially assess where the racing industry was positioned in terms of digital maturity and understanding versus industry standard.

They wanted to understand how digital and social media could be used to grow the sport further; Racecourses have differing levels of digital maturity and differing levels of resources. Many needed low-budget, high efficiency solutions to leverage the opportunities digital presents.

Seven League was engaged to advise on an approach to ‘rising the tide’ of the sport – increasing interest and attendance nationwide via digital and social media.

FIFA Fan Movement

As the governing body and steward of the beautiful game, FIFA’s mission is to bring football closer to the fans and fans closer to the football. Their aim, as part of FIFA 2.0 was to be the No.1 digital destination for the global football fan community by 2022.

In October 2017, FIFA started working with Seven League on a project to bring fans closer to football and introduce their voices at the heart of the organisation.

Seven League proposed a pioneering project - a game- changer for the sport. It needed not only to be unique within FIFA’s experience, but globally. Our Fan Movement is not just a one-off campaign, it’s a relationship that has grown over two years and continues to evolve…

Tottenham Hotspur Head of Content Embed

A third-party audit identified an opportunity for the club to grow its fanbase and leverage opportunities afforded through digital content. The Club’s content strategy needed to be redefined, under an overarching digital strategy. A new approach was needed to engage existing fans whilst also reaching & acquiring new fans. The commercial value of digital content could improve, both directly & indirectly.

The club required support in managing large digital projects and campaigns, as well as setting reporting processes, targets and KPIs. There was an opportunity to raise the ‘Digital DNA’ of the team, department and Club overall.

Seven League was tasked with delivering this shift in digital operations, fulfilling the role of Head of Content, reporting to the Board and leading a production team of 15

FC Barcelona Service Design

FC Barcelona is one of the world’s most recognisable and prestigious sports brands. The club has an immensely complicated range of products and services, with a diverse and global set of audiences, which makes effective planning, resource distribution and commercial delivery complex.

Our position as experts meant we were able to give clear perspective on the complex digital ecosystem.

Seven League was asked to look at the bigger picture and achieve clarity on the total service design in order to deliver market leading user experience and commercial viability

England Netball Digital Transformation

Digital Transformation

Netball is unique; the only major sport that’s female only at elite level. At grassroots level, on any given weekend more women in England are playing netball than men playing rugby (1.4m people in England express an interest).

In 2017, England Netball’s leadership team knew a critical period lay ahead. Moving from old offices in Hitchin to the Sports Park in Loughborough was key but would see some turbulence. There was a Commonwealth Games to come in Australia in 2018 and a home World Cup in Liverpool in 2019.

Like all sports governing bodies, there was the need to promote the elite game while also growing the grassroots game. As with any medium-sized NGB, there was the need to be commercially self-sufficient and lower the reliance on funding England Netball knew the answer was rapid digital transformation – and brought in Seven League to do it.

Bundesliga International Digital Partnership Embed

Bundesliga International (BLI) is the global arm of the German league, responsible for growing the brand internationally. It markets media rights for all platforms servicing over 80 broadcast, commercial and third-party partners. While broadcast partners promote the league in their respective markets, BLI plays an integral role in growing the brand through dedicated digital partnerships (e.g. telecoms operators).

Established in July 2017, BLI required intense support to manage collaborations with international digital partners and maximise utilisation of digital content. Seven League was engaged to boost the Bundesliga’s international growth during this initial transitional phase via an embedded member of staff.

Sport Streaming Strategy

The BBC, the UK's iconic national broadcaster, has enjoyed remarkable success with its iPlayer service. In the BBC Sport website it has one of the world's leading sports online news and analysis destinations.

However, in recent years its ability to bid for and win premium sports rights has been hampered by rising rights prices and the competitive pressure of pay TV services. The BBC needed advice on what it should do in the field of live sports streaming to boost usage of the iPlayer, to give its rights team a steer on which sports rights to pursue and to give consumers a clearer idea of the BBC's sports offering. Seven League was commissioned to assist.

NFL Academy Strategy​

The NFL had a vision to bring an Academy to London, to invest in the UK market, provide a pathway for talented athletes to play the sport and invest in its partnership with Tottenham Hotspur. The League felt instinctively that the Academy could also provide a rich channel of content that would appeal to younger audiences. What they needed was an agency that could bring this aspiration to life.
